Biomechanical Analysis of the Spine in Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis: Finite Element Analysis

Patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) develop fractures of the vertebral bodies, even in minor trauma, because loss flexibility, which causes difficulties fusing vertebrae; therefore, diagnosis spine injuries may be delayed. We used three-dimensional finite element method to add data on ossification healthy model order investigate how stress intervertebral discs changes bone shape and whether these present any risk factors. A a DISH flat (T8–sacrum) were generated from medical images. As an ossified hypertrophic model, T11–T12 was cross-linked ossification, hypertrophy found 5 10 mm. An ossifying groove (5 mm) created at T11–L1. center T12, radius curvature set 1 2.5 extension force flexion applied upper part T8, assuming that external forces direction spine. Stresses greater than model. In body similar flexion. increased. DISH, vertebrae are more susceptible stress. Furthermore, depending morphology stresses differed loads. examination geometry help surgeons decide thoracolumbar spine’s elevated position patients thereby contributing understanding pathogenesis pain.
